When should you wash your hands with soap?

The Impact of Excessive Soap Use on Skin Health

Soap is a hygiene product that is almost always used in daily routines. Its main function is to clean dirt, oil, and germs from the surface of the skin. However, did you know that excessive use of soap can actually have a negative impact on skin health?

1. Removes Natural Skin Oils

Human skin naturally produces oil (sebum) which functions to maintain moisture and protect the skin from irritation and infection. Excessive use of soap—especially soap with harsh chemicals—can remove this oil excessively, causing the skin to become dry and cracked.

2. Disrupts the Skin’s Natural pH

The skin has a natural pH that tends to be acidic (around pH 4.5–5.5) to protect against harmful bacteria and microorganisms. Soap that is used too often can change the skin’s pH to be more alkaline, which then weakens the skin’s defenses and increases the risk of infection and irritation.

3. Causes Irritation and Allergies

Active ingredients in soap such as fragrances, dyes, or preservatives can trigger allergic reactions or irritation, especially if used too often. Symptoms can include itching, rash, redness, or a burning sensation on the skin.

4. Worsen Skin Problems

People with certain skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or sensitive skin can experience relapses or worsening of symptoms if they use soap excessively. Skin that is too dry will be more easily inflamed and its protective layer will be damaged.

Tips for Healthy Soap Use:

• Use soap sparingly, especially on areas of the body that sweat or smell easily such as the armpits, groin, and feet.

• Choose a soap that is gentle and contains moisturizers, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin.

• Avoid antibacterial soaps unless medically necessary, as they can kill good bacteria on the skin.

• Use warm, not hot, water when bathing to avoid drying out the skin further.

Although soap is essential for cleanliness, its use must be wise. Excessive use of soap can cause various skin problems that actually interfere with health. Use soap as needed and choose a product that suits your skin type to keep your skin healthy, clean, and protected.
